Overview

As someone with a passion for innovation and problem-solving, I participated in the Taipei MRT Hackathon event. I focused on improving the functionality and user experience of the Taipei MRT app, using our skills in programming and user experience design to develop innovative solutions that could benefit the transportation system. Overall, participating in the Taipei MRT Hackathon was an enriching experience that allowed me to apply my skills to real-world problems and engage with fellow problem-solvers.

The Problem

Before the app was updated, there were several issues that resulted in a less-than-optimal user experience. These issues included excessive advertising, difficulty finding certain functions, and unintuitive route planning from point A to point B. These problems created a less smooth and less user-friendly experience for app users.

The proposed redesign aims to address these issues by improving the homepage, MRT network, journey planning, fare inquiry, travel time, station information, arrival times, train schedule information, and other relevant features.

Before Redesign

The Solution

When redesigning the app, I considered the user's perspective and analyzed user feedback to identify pain points in the current version. I focused on presenting the most commonly used and needed features in a more intuitive way, and revamped the user interface to enhance the overall user experience. The main goal of the product is to facilitate seamless movement from point A to point B. Additionally, I adjusted the placement of promotional messages related to purchasing behavior and placed the primary features on the pages that users visit the most.

Design Process

Feedback Collection & Analysis

To analyze the user pain points and prioritize the features that need improvement, I collected reviews from online app stores. By gathering feedback from users, I was able to identify the most common issues and concerns they face while using the app. This allowed me to prioritize the features that require improvement and ensure that the redesigned app satisfies the needs and expectations of users.

Clarify the problem

After collecting data from user research, I analyzed it to gain insights and identify patterns and trends. This analysis helped me make informed decisions and improve the user experience of the product or service.

To expedite the design process, I leveraged some of the existing features and icons from the app prior to the redesign, allowing me to quickly create low-fidelity design mockups. By using the existing elements as a starting point, I was able to focus on refining the user experience and making necessary modifications without having to start from scratch. This approach not only saved time but also ensured consistency between the old and new versions of the app. The low-fidelity design mockups provided a rough visual representation of the new design, allowing me to gather initial feedback and iterate on the design before moving forward with higher-fidelity prototypes.

Usability Test

To ensure that the redesign app meets the needs and expectations of users, I built a prototype and conducted usability testing. The prototype allowed me to test the app's new interface and features in a simulated environment, which helped me identify and address any potential issues.

Takeaways

Participating in this event was an enriching experience that allowed me to apply my skills and creativity to real-world problems. Through my efforts, I was able to develop innovative solutions that could potentially benefit the transportation system in Taipei. Overall, the Taipei MRT Hackathon was a great platform for individuals who are passionate about technology and innovation and who want to make a positive impact on society. I look forward to participating in similar events in the future and continuing to contribute to the development of innovative solutions that improve the lives of people in our communities.
